This is mother moorhen taking the bolder chick out for a swim. Next day she had two chicks in the water, and stubborn chick still clinging to the reeds. So at least three in this hen's brood this year.
Next day I saw that this moorhen had at least three chicks - two in the water and stubborn chick still clinging to the reeds. But this first day I only saw her with two - stubborn chick and this bolder one out for a swim lesson.
Through the "racket" of competing marsh wrens, I heard a soft cooing call, side-stepped for a different view of the marsh, and there was this moorhen trying to tempt her chicks out into the water. This one seemed to be clinging stubbornly to the reeds.
As the title suggests this is a garden life bird and No. 50 of the year.
Been here for 4 hours now feeding and preening. It was disturbed from the front door step by the youngest who said "theres a big blackbird outside" it flew over the house to the back where it has been ever since.

The Moorhen is a distinctive species, with dark plumage apart from the white undertail, yellow legs and a red facial shield. The young are browner and lack the red shield. It has a wide range of gargling calls and will emit loud hisses when threatened.[3]

Well we managed to get a couple of hours in at Cley before the light went yesterday. Nothing much of any excitement about, so we are off to Titchwell this morning.
My family & I went to Crealy Adventure Park Nr Exeter in Devon on 27.10.2010.
While my two lovely children were playing in the indoor play area i went for a walk around the boating lake.
