    This is mother moorhen taking the bolder chick out for a swim. Next day she had two chicks in the water, and stubborn chick still clinging to the reeds. So at least three in this hen's brood this year.

    Next day I saw that this moorhen had at least three chicks - two in the water and stubborn chick still clinging to the reeds. But this first day I only saw her with two - stubborn chick and this bolder one out for a swim lesson.

    Stubborn chick clung to the reeds, and finally the moorhen had to turn her attentions to the rest of the brood.

    Through the "racket" of competing marsh wrens, I heard a soft cooing call, side-stepped for a different view of the marsh, and there was this moorhen trying to tempt her chicks out into the water. This one seemed to be clinging stubbornly to the reeds.

    As the title suggests this is a garden life bird and No. 50 of the year. Been here for 4 hours now feeding and preening. It was disturbed from the front door step by the youngest who said "theres a big blackbird outside" it flew over the house to the back where it has been ever since.
