mute swan cygnets

  1. Evening exercise

    Evening exercise

On our way home we called in for a final cuppa at Rescobie Loch, on the outskirts of Forfar. The only thing of interest during that short visit was a Mute Swan family.
  2. Family outing

    Family outing

There's an island not far from the hide which this Mute Swan family seemed to be heading for. Quite well grown cygnets too.
  3. Young about

    Young about

Of course Kinnordy (and the birds) didn't let us down by providing some youngsters. A Mute Swan swam past the hide leading her group of little cygnets - they look very young, so I don't think they're long hatched.

    Plus one.... so....

..... must be a different family. Right in front of the hide were a group of three Mute Swan cygnets, so can't be the same ones as the previous ones with an adult. No adult in sight this time though.

    Eight in the wake

They're easier to count in this shot, taken just seconds before the one I posted yesterday. By the way, an uplifting story about this place for Aloktewari: While up there I learned that this whole wetland was re-created from a stream that I gather had been enclosed in a drainage pipe long ago...

Maybe a bit tight in the frame for most, but it just about works for me

    Cygnets

I noticed a pair of Mute Swans at my local reservoirs yesterday morning, but was a bit disappointed that they didn't have any youngsters with them. As they swam to the bank, little white heads started to pop-up out of the feathers of one of their backs ;)
  10. Let loose

    Let loose

I've been watching this family through the summer and at last the parents seem to think they're safe to explore on their own.

    Swan plus Cygnets

I messed this up a bit, as I needed a smaller aperture to get the Cygnets properly in focus. I don't see Cygnets out of the water often, so thought I'd upload it anyway
