Trying to have a little afternoon nap on a warm day, this yellow-crowned night heron would open one eye to watch people pass by from about 12 feet away - once determined to not be a threat, the eye would close again.

Managed to catch him just as he took flight. Not great focus due to the distance from him and the motion of the boat on the water. Still, I am happy I caught him in flight.

Scowling view. It ignored or didn't notice me when I took the first few photos, turned and "scowled" at me, then resumed ignoring me and looking out over the pond.
I think this is a juvenile black crowned rather than Yellow crowned night heron, but after staring at the pics in my field guides, I'm not sure. I suppose I could have watched it for 3 more months to see how the adult plumage turned out.....
