At Kealia Pond I asked if there were any other birding hot spots nearby that I had missed. I had one more morning that I could spend birding, so it had to be close to Wailea. They suggested a little pond at the end of a gravel road down to Makena Beach. Very near my hotel, so easy to get there...
I really like these little beauties, there was a nest right by our room but I think the local Kestrels ate the chicks as I caught one flying down onto the bush they were in!!
Such a shame they didn't get time to fledge.

A bird that is not indiginous to the United States. They have been introduced in the 1980's and have established fetal populations in California and Florida. This male is part of a population that is well establishe in a publick park in Orange Co. CA. They like the small seeds that can be...
I was very excited about this bird because I had never seen it before. I went to the I.D. forum and found out it is a native of south east Asia, and they are breeding in Southern California. It and another was bathing in a very small stream. So I guess this is now a bird of North Amercia.
This little beauty was in a small flock of about 6 to 8 that came to visit my complex. They have had a small established population near my place for years now and nest near the San Diego river which is about 1/4 mile or so from where I live.
Very social birds, the Nutmeg Mannikins. Exotic finches, they are an introduced species native to Southeast Asia. They are a rare find in Southern California. Lonchura punctulata in San Diego, CA, 07-19-07, Canon 20D 400/f5.6L. More photos of same at http://www.picturetrail.com/marysan.

Never know what is going to show up when out on a shoot. The target bird for the day was to be warblers: most specifilally Yellow, Townsends and Black-Throated Grey. The Yellow warbler was seen early and recorded. It was while trying to coax out a Marsh Wren (with recorded calls) that a bird...
We were birding along a local creek and found this most beautiful Nutmeg Mannikin. For several years there have been small colonies of these Exotic Finches in both Southern and Northern California as well as some in Florida. These birds are native to India and are considered escapees in North...
