    Yellow-crowned Night Heron

The large eyes are well adapted for its nocturnal habits. Taken from a photo blind, there were two or three of these night-herons hiding in a wooded swampy section of the Arroyo Colorado. The large swollen bill is specialized for eating crabs. Six subspecies are recognized. This is the nominate...
  3. Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

    Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

A rather bedraggled looking immature (SY), probably a refugee from a recent storm. The large swollen bill is specialized for eating crabs. They breed in coastal Central Texas, but this bird was almost certainly a migrant.
  4. Yellow-crested night herons

    Yellow-crested night herons

My yard guests woke up around sunset and are still in the process of nest-building. The male was gifting her with twigs, which she wove into the nest.

The chisel shaped bill is important in identifying this bird. Unfortunately, there is something pale in front of the bill, but with the bird hiding inside the vegetation, that is difficult to avoid.

    Yellow-crested night heron

For the second year in a row, I'll be hearing the-pitter patter (and squawking) of baby night herons! The male arrived last Thursday, displayed for 20 minutes but left. They returned together Sunday and have been quite busy renovating last year's nest. The pair that nested in the next tree over...

    Yellow-crowned Night Heron

What I believe is an invertebrate in its beak was disappearing (eaten) during the next few seconds.
  9. Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

    Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

Back for its third year, this adult is well north of its normal West Coast range. Note the characteristic large swollen bill specialized for eating crabs. This species has expanded its range northward with multiple pairs breeding in coastal Southern California as far as Ventura County. Their...

    Play With Your Food

This Yellow-crowned Night Heron tosses a small crab in the air to position it for a good swallow (he dropped it the first time!).

A Yellow-crowned Night Heron takes offense to my presence after several minutes of observing him hunt.

This is the first time I've seen--and photographed--one of these birds. It posed nicely for its portrait.

    Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

On the island there is a huge shopping mall, and on one side is a wetland. Above this they made a nature trail looking out across the bay. If you turn around you see cars and shops, kind of weird but kind of nice.

This species has expanded its range northward with multiple pairs breeding in coastal Southern California as far as Ventura County. Their first successful...

    Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

I stumbled across this adult hiding behind a fallen limb in a wooded swamp. Note the large swollen bill specialized for eating crabs. Six subspecies are recognized. This is the nominate race characterized by darker coloration, broader dorsal streaks and having a thinner bill than the West Coast...
