    White eye

Cute White eye lands on this white flower.
  2. Okinawa Robin (Male) giving me a look

Okinawa Robin (Male) giving me a look

A visiting birder from England (Phil Edwards) and I were given a treat by this male Ryukyu Robin posing for us as his partner collected nesting material. The male was a stunner and did his song and dance routine and posed for over 30 minutes for us. I think we took over 500 photos between the...
  3. Running Rail

    Running Rail

Another shot of the Okinawa Rail from a few days ago. I like this shot as it shows the small tail and the extensive barred undersides.
  4. Okinawa Rail

    Okinawa Rail

Any day I can get a good photo of the Okinawa Rail makes for a good day of birding in my book. This was one of the first birds of the day, the second good bird in fact as I had fair views (but no photo) of the Pryer's Woodpecker just a few moments prior to this.
  5. Okinawa Robin (Male) singing

    Okinawa Robin (Male) singing

I went out over the weekend with a visiting Dutch birder to find the Okinawan endemics. We had good luck dipping only on the Wood Pigeon. Found this beautiful male Ryukyu Robin singing his heart out. Probably my best photo of this species.
  6. Black-Necked Grebe

    Black-Necked Grebe

This Black-Necked Grebe in his smart Winter plumage was out for a morning swim along a mangrove lined river.
  7. White-Breasted Waterhen preening

    White-Breasted Waterhen preening

I came across this White-Breasted Waterhen that much have just finished bathing and was now preening and drying his feathers in the morning sun.
  8. Red-Throated Pipit

    Red-Throated Pipit

Several species of Pipits winter here in Okinawa. They can be very tricky to get a good ID on, this species and the Olive-Backed Pipit are the only two fairly easy to ID.
  9. Chinese Pond Heron

    Chinese Pond Heron

This Chinese Pond Heron was less than five minutes from my house. It seemed to have a broken right leg and walked with great difficulty, almost crawling on it's "knees" (yes, I know they're not really knees) but seemed otherwise healthy and was foraging in a field.
  10. Greylag Goose

    Greylag Goose

I've heard reports of a visiting Greylag and been out before looking for it with no luck until today on a whim, Tom and I decided to give Nago a shot. Not only did we find the Greylag and 7 Greater White Fronted Geese, but found three Rooks and two Chinese Pond Herons today, not to mention...
  11. Purple Heron

    Purple Heron

This bird has been on my "Target List" for a few years. It was quite a pleasant surprise to see it at my local patch in Kin this morning. A "Lifer" for me, the first of two this morning!
  12. Two Spoonbill species

    Two Spoonbill species

In what is probably a very rare occurrence, here are two species of Spoonbills side by side together in the wild. On the left is an endangered Black-Faced Spoonbill and on the right, a rare visitor to Okinawa, a Eurasian Spoonbill. I consider myself very fortunate to have captured this scene.
  13. Long-Toed Stint

    Long-Toed Stint

This Long-toed Stint stayed put as his mates flew off when I drove slowly up the them. I'm glad he did as I was able to get several really close up shots of him. A nice way to start the new year!
  14. One that didn't get away

    One that didn't get away

I've wanted to get this type of "gotcha" shot for a long time, I was fortunate enough to finally get one just before the end of the year. There were three Osprey hunting over the river and this one was kind enough to fly close to us to show off his catch of the day!
  15. Chinese Bulbul

    Chinese Bulbul

As I was loading gear in my truck preparing for my "Wild Goose Chase", a commotion in the neighbors yard caught my attention, several Japanese White Eyes were making a racket as a pair of Chinese Bulbuls moved in on their feeding area. One of the culprits paused for a photo here...
  16. Chinese Pond Heron

    Chinese Pond Heron

A nice way to start out a new year of birding here in Japan, a lifer! There's been reports of a Greylag goose and some Rooks here in Okinawa. I set off a few days ago to hunt them down, found the Rooks but dipped on the goose. Driving down one of the small farm roads, this bird flew right in...
  17. Bath time for Mr. Spoonbill

    Bath time for Mr. Spoonbill

This young Eurasian Spoonbill has somehow found its way to Okinawa and is with a small group of Black-Faced Spoonbills in southern Okinawa. This was a lifer for me and I got some decent photos too! All in all a good day!
  18. Reflecting on a Black-Faced Spoonbill

    Reflecting on a Black-Faced Spoonbill

My birding partner Tom let me know about a Eurasian Spoonbill that was in our favorite small pond down in southern Okinawa. I made it down there yesterday and found it and also several Black-Faced Spoonbills. The Black-Faced are much rarer birds with only some 1,500 remaining in the wild. We are...
  19. Hooded Crane on Okinawa!

    Hooded Crane on Okinawa!

I was driving to my local patch at Kin to meet up with my birding partner Tom and a birder visiting from Tokyo Chris, when I get a call from Tom telling me he's looking through the scope at a Hooded Crane in the fields of Kin. A few moments later and sure enough, that's what we had, an Okinawa...
  20. Surf Crab

    Surf Crab

These crabs scurry around on rocky coasts seemingly watching my every move. Or wondering how they can make a meal of me as they seem to eat anything they can find.
  21. Just missed

    Just missed

An Osprey pulls up after a missed grab at a fish. They sometimes hunt in the small river in front of my house, nothing like starting your day with a cup of coffee on the balcony watching Osprey's dive for fish!
  22. Chips anyone?

    Chips anyone?

A young White Wagtail sits atop a mound of "Taro-Imo" slices that will be used as starters for the next crop. The Grey Wagtails are usually the first to arrive, about 2-3 weeks after we see them, the White Wagtails follow en masse. There are several subspecies that pass through...
  23. Surf's Up

    Surf's Up

This Little Egret seems oblivious to the surfers in the background. The Southern end of Okinawa is a popular surf point as well as a good birding area (especially at low tide when all the tide pools are exposed).
  24. In the reeds

    In the reeds

A handsome Wood Sandpiper makes his way through the reeds.
  25. Ninja Turtle meets his match

    Ninja Turtle meets his match

This Juv Black-Crowned Night Heron is working on how to make a meal out of this small turtle. Even if he gets it down the hatch, how would it come out?
