I hope you're all enjoying spring as much as I am. I've been getting acquainted with the resident great/blue tits and finches in my garden. I also had a family of ring necked parakeets visit the pear tree last winter. Although they're quite common in the south (London) all year...
The monk parakeet, aka quaker parrot, is one of Florida's more colorful and noisy invasive species...I can't say I ever mind seeing them, even though they're not supposed to be here - every time I spot one it transports me to the Caribbean!
Here we call them monk parakeets - others call them 'Quaker parrots'. Very well established invasive species here in South Florida, huge 'apartment' style nests can be found on the side of power poles and cell towers with 15-30 or more nesting chambers. And they are very noisy!

I was wondering whether any of the parakeet species currently living in a feral state in the former range of the Carolina parakeet will eventually fill (or partially fill) its ecological niche? Here in the south-east UK the rose-ringed...
