Males and females are alike. This is an adult with a pronounced black ear patch, large black bib, and a nearly all black bill. Nine or more subspecies are recognized. This race, presumably the small dark "P. m. malaccensis" was introduced to Ambon and now appears to be established there (Long...

came across a small group of tree sparrows today, first ones I saw since a few years, they are unfortunately rare here nowadays. Seems like he as well hadn't seen a birdwatcher for quite a while LOL.

    Last leaves

Yes, leaves get in the way. But even when they're in the way, I do usually find them more attractive than bare branches. Oh well. We've turned the corner as far as sunlight is concerned. We'll have leaves again in a few months.

Eurasian Tree Sparrow. And yes, whoever it was who commented ... they do seem rounder here than in southern Europe. I'm not sure if they're fatter or if they just fluff up their feathers more ... or both. Either or both would help them survive the cold winters.

Today's set are all Autumnal images. This Tree Sparrow, for instance, was busy harvesting seeds from something related to carroway.

Pouting. Perhaps impatient for more food? I quickly moved on so the parents wouldn't be hesitant on my account. Should perhaps have stayed long enough to check my exposure settings, but this will have to do.

Also, my favorite of our two main sparrow species here. I'd have a tougher time choosing a favorite in the US where there are so many sparrow species to choose from. And now to go touring the gallery. Always inspiring to see what others have captured.
