I was extremely lucky to come across a pelican that didn't mind being close to people. This pelican let people sit only a few feet away from him. He didn't seem at all distressed. He was more interested in watching the water for food.
Tired of beak performances, this one has simply tucked the beak away for warmth. Taken from just a couple of metres away from the bird, making it easy to get good clarity.

Close up, the beak pouch looks for all the world like the jumpers my mother used to knit for us... and I could swear there's even a dropped stitch... :'D Their beaks are colouring up now for the breeding season, giving a lovely range of soft pastels. :t:

This chap frequents this perch across the river from the Adelaide Convention Centre, defending it against all comers...it's his spot, in the middle of the city rush and bother, all of which means nothing to him.

Australian Pelican
It seems a pity that the water birds are so fond of this little platform, on which a feeder has been bolted to help them avoid the worst effects of the drought and the loss of aquatic vegetation that this has caused. Also, why were there no signs on other parts of the river...
Australian Pelican
This Pelican was trying to groom its breast feathers. Again and again, it ended up grabbing a large section of its own breast instead of the feathers it was trying for...but eventually it succeeded. This must be a daily battle for a bird with such an unwieldy beak, I felt for...
Australian Pelican
The wonderful thing about birds who occupy an urban niche is their composure when approached by humans. This bird sat pondering the mysteries, while I walked up to it and took all the photos I wanted from various angles and distances, without disturbing it in the slightest...
Australian Pelican
This fellow was standing by the Torrens river in Adelaide in the late afternoon sun. At that time of day, the river is in shadow, and birds standing on the eastern bank are bathed in strong direct sunlight. This gives a very dark background, which in this case, has worked...
