  1. Birds in snow - 3

    Birds in snow - 3

And finally, the bird we drove up there to see: A Siberian Jay. This was my second trip up there this winter and my second time ever seeing Siberian Jays. Quite a few lovely shots. I may share another later, but chose this one for the snow theme set.

  4. Another

    Another

Couldn't resist sharing more of the shots I got of the Siberian Jay. I've been going up there every winter for years hoping to see one of these birds, that I was told were often seen there and so "tame" they would even eat from your hand. But they've been inexplicably absent ... until they...
  5. Whoo hoo!

    Whoo hoo!

Now towards the end of February, however, not only are we getting longer and brighter days, and not only is the light helped by all the reflective snow ... but I even got a lifer yesterday :D My very first Siberian Jay. Two of them, in fact. They've been frequenting the feeders all week at a...

Siberian Jay in the vicinity of Lake Baikal

This is one of the pictures I took 2 years ago when visiting Lake Baikal. The Siberian jay is an elusive bird which is difficult to see, but also readily observes people from the shadows of the forest. This one visited me as I was sitting on the banks of a small river.

    Siberian Jay

As the week passed and still no sign of a Siberian Jay I honestly thought that I was going to miss it on my visit to Finland Last week. Selected locations were visited and revisited, an extra eagle eye was on high alert just in case. On the return journey south on the penultimate day I returned...

You could crop this picture above, but i tend to rarely do it with my pictures. Sometimes it can be good to have "space" in the images, eg if it will be used for a cover of a magazine, etc.

  15. Disastrous Talker

    Disastrous Talker

Not long ago this bird was associated with death in more than one way. It's scientific name literally means "disastrous talker". But you could not just get rid of it by killing it, as it was said the rifle used to kill it would be rendered useless by such an act. I disagree totally...
  16. Siberian Jay - adult

    Siberian Jay - adult

Both the parents were more or less indifferent to me after the chick and I had "socialized". They lay their eggs in late Mars during what is still winter here. So by now the chick is almost fully grown.
  17. Siberian Jay Chick

    Siberian Jay Chick

When Sweden and England played their crucial football match I went to Klhuvudet nature reserve for some tranquility. A family of 3 Siberian Jays passed me by during breakfast. I followed them across the marsh and luckily the chick got curious and approached me.
