50 to 70 cm (20 to 28 in) in length, the pheasant coucal is a large heavy-set bird adapted for living on the ground, reminiscent of a pheasant in shape. Birds in breeding plumage have black heads, necks, breasts and bellies, barred chestnut wings and long black, brown and cream barred tails...

This Coucal has been wandering around the garden and up the steps of the house to walk along the verandah for some time but this is the first time that I have had the camera handy .

Pheasant Coucals spend much of their time on the ground. We'd been stalking this bird for some time when it suddenly emerged on the path behind us. I'm in the process of editing a 2 hour concert filmed with 4 cameras, which takes a huge amount of time, so apologies for lack of comments!

This is a fascinating bird, as well as looking fabulous! It's a cuckoo, but doesn't lay its eggs in other birds' nests. It lives mainly on the ground, and prowls around like a small mammal looking for insects, frogs, eggs, lizards etc.

This Coucal spent some time in the garden yesterday having a drink and splash about in the birdbath

This Pheasant Coucal is a regular visitor to our garden and will sometimes just walk around your feet.

Another dull/wet day here when this Pheasant Coucal popped into the garden to brighten things up and found a grasshopper for lunch

A rather windy and dull day over the wetlands last Oct

A pair of Pheasant Coucal recently returned to my place. Haven't seen them for months. Now I often hear the loud whooping from a distance, or see them in distant trees. But the other morning this one landed on my neighbour's gate post & I managed to lean out my window for a photo :)
