I was just turning the focus ring to get a better look at her when he took off. I missed that, but caught her take-off microseconds later. They landed in taller grass on the other side of the path. I could still see them, but decided not to stress them any further.

Anyway, as I said, the pheasant turned and walked straight at me for a bit. I did my pillar of salt act. Not that I could disappear. I'm a good deal taller than this grass and there was no other cover. But I did my best not to alarm him.
Getting off the bus at Uganda Road meant that I had pretty much the full length of the preserve to hike to get down to the shore where most of the action supposedly is. I think in all I hiked about 10 km. The barnacle geese were about 1k in. Another 4k further I saw my next bird (but for crows)...
