    BH Grosbeak - Juvenile Male

I thought this was a female at 1st, but after consulting my Sibley book, it looks like this is what he calls a "1st winter male". The "winter" terminology sounds weird, but he lists the months as Aug-April. I believe he's eating Mexican Elderberries.

This little lady showed up tonight at dinner time so I shot through the window to get her. I think we need some more food out there. We saw her mate in the field next to us earlier today, so I will be stalking him at the feeder.

When the fully dressed male drops in, it's not just the seeds that scatter. Every year it's still a thrill to have a big male Black-headed Grosbeak pull in to the feeder. Shown here just a little larger than his up-to 8 1/2" length.
