When Woody calls... I go searching!
Sometimes I find him, sometimes I don't. I had searched for about 15 minutes and could not see him. Saddened, I turn for home. He must have seen my sadness for he made his presence known with his "WUK WUK WUK WUK!"
(Translation: "Hey friend...
Second shot of the female Pileated Woodpecker, who returned to the feeder this morning. It was the first time I'd seen her in 3 weeks. A few days ago I hung up a Royal Wing "Woodpecker suet" cake from Tractor Supply, and it finally did the trick!
I had been wishing for 3 weeks to see her again, and this morning my wish came true! She was on the feeder around 9 am, but I was roaming around the yard, so she saw me and flew away. I returned inside, and then stepped out on my porch a little after 10 am, and was delightfully surprised to...
She returned on schedule this morning, a little before 8 a.m., with the temp a little above freezing. Most mornings have been too dark, so this morning I deliberately set my ISO to 200. Leaned against the side of the building and got a number of shots, but in 95% of them, she was hiding her...
A dream come true! Just yesterday I had placed a suet cake in this feeder that was supposed to be especially for woodpeckers. I had placed it just for her in hopes that she would return, and today she did! Sorry if this is redundant, but it is a slightly different pose, taken in same session...
As I stepped out on the porch this afternoon on my way to the store, there she was! I quietly returned inside to get my camera. This bird is so timid, I made a point to hide behind the porch alcove so she wouldn't notice me. After getting a few shots, I tried to move slowly to the left to get...
Such an unusual looking bird for this area. While she is on the tree, she seems to intimidate the other birds from visiting. I have not seen the male in my backyard this winter, but am hoping he is around. A few months ago, I sighted both on a tree across the road. 27 degrees F, -3C, when I...
She usually visits around 8 am, when it is cold and dim. Here she is this morning on the Mockers tree, the one they have claimed as their own and generally guard against other birds. Im sure the Mockers were nearby, but they were not on the tree. 1/40, F3.7
While I was watching her early this morning, this very shy female Pileated Woodpecker spent most of the time hitching up and down the tree. Here she is feeding from the new homemade peanut butter cake that I had hung out yesterday afternoon. To guard against scaring her away, I had to crouch...
This morning she was not on the Mockers' primary tree, but on the second tree where I had placed an extra feeder a couple of days ago. The second tree, unfortunately, is a little farther away than the primary tree, where I can usually get better photos.
From early this morning, the first of three Woodpecker species I saw today on the same tree! Sorry for the poor quality. We had freezing rain last night, and the porch was too icy to set up a tripod. The tripod would not have helped very much, however, because the best exposure under a grey...
Finally was able to catch a photo of the Pileated on the side of our front yard. We have a wooded area between ours and our neighbor's. I find it hard to get them because they only stay in the wooded sections of our yard and never come close to say hello!! lol
......this is one from my first days with a DSLR, taken in June of 06. It was and probably still is noisy and the grass is a funny green, got some of the noise out but could not do much with the colors.
This Pileated Woodpecker just threw anything in its way over its right shoulder while feeding (cranking the eyelid to half-mast as well) in the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in western Washington State. Photo by Jeff Larsen 2011
