  3. First signs of the winter season

First signs of the winter season

I was feeding my garden birds one morning and heard .... ooooh where are they?!! Grabbed my camera and searched the sky; they suddenly appeared over the top of some houses. A lovely skein of Pink-footed Geese.
  4. Autumn arrivals

    Autumn arrivals

I managed to get a few visits in to Kinnordy in October, before the light hours became too short. As soon as I sat down in the hide, some geese flew over, had no time to adjust the camera settings so not the best of pictures. Pretty sure they're Pink-foot though. My first of the season.
  5. Fly Past

    Fly Past

A nice day and thought I'd have a wander along the river to see what I could see..... absolutely nothing!!! So did some retail therapy;) Returning to my car I suddenly heard..... managed to grab my camera in time to catch this lot before they disappeared behind the trees. Woke up to snow this...

    Pink-footed Goose

While watching the Teal in yesterday's picture, this goose was suddenly spotted on the other side of the loch, so a bit distant in the poor light. I'd driven past this loch on the bypass on my way to the Bash and saw two swans but they'd disappeared. Sorry... I forgot to tell you that it was...

    Pink-footed Geese

FOS Our last stop that day and hardly any light left at all. In a field near Kirriemuir we at last found some Pink-feet and loads of them. This picture shows about half the flock. A bit of a shame they were so far the other side of the field though.

    Balancing act

Right arm "complaining" a bit. Trying not to type too much. I'll browse and comment just a few shots at a time and post only this one today. Saturday fun shot: Pink-footed goose doing its balancing act - up on one foot, balancing a bit of down fluff on its beak (actually, I think that...
  13. Pub stop

    Pub stop

I think this pink-footed just stopped for a pub break on its way north. Note that its goose-neck position is a bit different from the greylag's. After all, the pink-footed has a shorter neck. But what was it Lincoln supposedly said when someone tried to tease him by asking how long he thought a...

    Pink-footed goose

The pink-footed isn't the only goose with pink feet. Many greylags have pink feet too. Also they both have big white rear ends. The Norwegian name gives a more intuitive ID. In Norwegian it's kortnebbgs - short-billed goose. Greylags have a big, orangey bill. Pink-footeds have a shortish, dark...
  15. Number 732

    Number 732

Pink-footed Goose is rare in North America. This was the fifth bird ever for NS and the first three were together. In 2011 John Vanderpoel of Colorado was doing a North American "Big Year", (which excludes Mexico). When John saw this bird on Nov. 9, 2011 it was his 732nd species for...

    Time for bed

Well roost anyway! As the light dimmed, the Pinkfeet started to arrive back at Kinnordy for the night. Well, I think they're all Pinkfeet; maybe you can see something else in amongst the black blobs;) I won't be arguing with you:-O

  19. First of the Season

    First of the Season

It's really quite difficult getting decent pictures just now; the feeders seem to only have visitors too early in the morning for light; and there's either no birds along the river, or they're in too dark a place to get a shot. Looks like I'll be searching the archives for a bit (unless I get...

Hey guys! There's a goose over here!

We'd been further up-river, looking for tufties when we met an equally disappointed but far better equipped birder. He saw lapwings on the far shore, which I'd missed. Then we swapped tips. I told him of the first winter pair of whoopers in a stream just around the bend. He told us to watch for...

    Pink-footed Geese

AAP Back in 2005 I paid an autumn visit to Vane Farm to see the geese. Hundreds of pinkies had arrived - this picture shows just a few of them. Somewhere, in amongst, was a Barnacle Goose. Digiscoped through the heat haze.

    Unfamiliar territory

This photo is dedicated to all the young pink footed geese that arrive at martinmere for the first time ever. To see such unfamilar territory must be daunting indeed.
