pipilo maculatus

  1. Spotted Towhee

    Spotted Towhee

In heavy molt, this disheveled looking juvenile showed up at our house and I finally managed a few photos. Not all that rare, but they tend to hide in dense chaparral where they are more often heard than seen. They rarely visit our yard.

This species has declined in urban and suburban areas coincident with a proliferation of feral and free-roaming cats. But it is still doing well in more remote chaparral covered hillsides. Twenty-two subspecies are currently recognized. This is a male "P. m. falcifer" one of the darker coastal...

Spotted towhee completely unconcerned about me...

I'm repairing some flood damage in a home in the Mt. Baker area, less than two miles from my place, and as I'm taking tools in from the truck I pass this male spotted towhee and he's not the least bit afraid of me as I walk within two feet of him. From talking to the homeowner and her neighbors...

I have seen them with brown eyes and red eyes. I looked this one up on the internet since it wasn't in my National Audubon Society Field Guide To North American Birds and they called it the Spotted Towhee. I know KC probably knows the information on all these so maybe she can better explain it...

    Spotted Towhee

Male Towhee that made a brief appearance out from the bushes. There were several in the area, some I saw and others I could hear. They are very shy but noisy when rummaging through brush.

    Spotted Towhee

Some puzzling juvenile songbirds such as this recently fledged Spotted Towhee bear very little resemblance to the adults. They make good "quiz birds."
