  1. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

Colored like a strawberry and lemon sherbet popsicle. This SY (second calendar year) male has completed a partial first pre-alternate molt. Most of the juvenile wings and tail have been retained from the previous year. In the fall it will undergo a complete pre-basic molt into an all red plumage.
  2. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

A stunning adult male feeding on an orange put out by volunteers. Males take two years to reach this all red plumage after which they keep it all year. There is no drab winter plumage. Presumably the smaller, brighter, more migratory eastern race (P. r. rubra).. Western populations average...
  3. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

This is a female, distinguished from female Scarlet Tanager by its larger size, warmer orange-yellow color, larger bill lacking "tooth" and paler, less contrasting wings and tail.
  4. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

This is a female, distinguished from female Scarlet Tanager by its larger size, warmer orange-yellow color (not green), larger bill and paler, non-contrasting wings. Note also the lack of an obvious projecting "tooth" extending down from the cutting edge of the bill.
  5. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

This stunning adult male, spent a long time posing on the sidewalk trying to eat this large wasp. It kept dropping the wasp and picking it up, evidently trying to remove the wings. I would appreciate if somebody can identify the wasp. The tanager was completely oblivious to the crowd of birders...
  6. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

I believe this is an SY (second calendar year) male having completed its first prealternate molt. They remind me of red & yellow sherbet popsicles. In the fall it will molt into all red definitive adult plumage. This is the smaller, brighter, more migratory eastern race (P. r. rubra). Note the...

It was sitting in a relatively dark spot with a lot of light on the background.
  13. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

Grounded by a cold front, this is an adult male of the smaller, brighter, more migratory eastern race (P. r. rubra). Note the bright red color and smaller bill. Western populations average duller and paler. Genetics have found that the North American tanagers in the genus "Piranga" are actually...
  14. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

The males take two years to acquire the all red plumage of adults. This is an immature (first alternate plumage) hatched in 2020 with a patchy mixture of bright red and mustard-yellow recalling the colors of sherbet.
  15. Summer Tanager

    Summer Tanager

This is a female. Note the more olive colored back and mustard yellow underparts characteristic of the eastern nominate subspecies. Western populations average duller and paler. Genetics have found that the North American tanagers in the genus "Piranga" are actually not related to the colorful...
