    Colored like a strawberry and lemon sherbet popsicle. This SY (second calendar year) male has completed a partial first pre-alternate molt. Most of the juvenile wings and tail have been retained from the previous year. In the fall it will undergo a complete pre-basic molt into an all red plumage.

    This is a female, distinguished from female Scarlet Tanager by its larger size, warmer orange-yellow color (not green), larger bill and paler, non-contrasting wings. Note also the lack of an obvious projecting "tooth" extending down from the cutting edge of the bill.
