This Purple Swamphen was captured in eastern Chitwan national park during the jeep safari. It is beautiful bird with purplish blue coloration, grey head and large bill. It is large bird of about 45 - 50 cm bird that is mainly winter visitor and passage migrant. It also breeds locally.

I remember as a young man looking at these in my Birds of Britain and Europe bird guide and thinking how exotic they were. Here we see them so often they can be overlooked!
