Taken at Bempton Cliffs, probably at about 04.30 as the sun was rising so you get that soft, warm light, which makes it so much easier to get the exposure correct plus, at that time of day you have the place to yourself.
These razorbills were sat behind a protrusion. Not fussed that we were just a few meters away. Though the bill is broad side on, it is thin and sharp when you look at it head on. And amazing to see a flowering plant on what is a rocky cliff.
This was taken from my sea kayak. I find that if I just drift along quietly in the wind and tide large rafts of auks will often come very close. I always give the birds plenty of time and space to get out of the way if they want without causing a mass panic. Some of these birds came to within...
I couldn't decide if they were a pair or just a couple of guys hanging out.
The sharp eyed amongst you just might be able to spot the water droplet at the end of the bill on the one on the right.
Sadly nearly at the end of the island pictures now.. but a long way from finishing the day...
This one was a bit awkward, as he was above my head on the cliff.
This, again, was the only picture where his head was in profile - the rest of them he turned his head away.
Was chuffed to bits to get this razorbill on the ledge. What beautiful birds when you get to see them alive and up close (the last time I saw them was after a storm when they were washing up on the beach).
