Had this very unusual guest drop in my yard in the winter of 2015. Although it's not unheard of to see one here, they are very rare in these parts. We are outside the northern range of these birds. I had never seen one before, and I have not seen one since. This one came almost every day for...
I thought I would never see this bird again. At one time they were very rare in Maine. The last time I saw one was in Camden,Me I guess they are on the rise here.
Actually this red bellied woodpecker was having an issue with some particularly sticky peanut butter. Maybe it was sticking to the inside of his bill, he worked his tongue like this a lot to get it down. Neat to catch him with his tongue out like that though. .
The red bellied woodpecker that driops by occasionally. He stops by for a quick bite then leaves after a short visit. he never stays long, but judging from that belly, he gets ebough to eat!
I guess he's getting more comfortable with the yard and the feeding areas. This is much closer to the house than he's ever come before. They certainly are a pretty bird.
The red bellied woodpecker popped in for a visit again today. My hope grows that it will stay in the area and get a share of the feed we put out. So far it seems to be doing ok and it's a pleasure to keep seeing it.

No humorous or pun filled title for this one. This is serious business! lol
Today has been a banner day for me. First the grosbeaks, then this bird swooped in. It's what I take to be a red bellied woodpecker. This is a lifer for me. Initially I thought it to be a northern flicker, but then I...
This red belly woodpecker frequents this tree near the dock. It is shy and elusive and jumpy so very difficult to get a clear focused shot as it is usually in shadow. The tree is a tallow, which unfortunately is an exotic. People originally planted them because the leaves turn a beautiful...
