Well Peeps, We are on the road again this morning...Back home to Hastings after just over 2 weeks away. We had a nice few hours at Cley yesterday, but the Reserve was quiet. Hope everyone has a great day, catch up with y'all later.

    Red-breasted Merganser

Went to the Widewater Lagoon hoping to get some shots of these and saw two there both very busily diving for food. I presume that these are juvenile or eclipse males? No Goosanders around while I was there though.
  9. Red-breasted Merganser

    Red-breasted Merganser

Well Peeps, I had a great day out in West Sussex yesterday, in the company of me good birding buddy BF's Aivars Kalejs. It was overcast and damp for most of the day, but we did see some good birds. We stopped of at Widewater Lagoon, between Lancing and Shoreham, where wee see 3 Goosanders, and 3...

    Red-breasted Merganser

Found this red-breasted merganser in with a bunch of common mergansers in the pool above a dam. We don't see that many of these this far in from the coast as they seem to prefer the coastal salt water to the inland ponds and lakes.
  14. Bad Hair Day

    Bad Hair Day

There were about 10-15 Red Breasted Mergansers at the light house where I shot the Harlequin Duck. All males, possibly young ones. This one had just come up from a dive.
  15. Red-breasted Merganser

    Red-breasted Merganser

Another shot from Newport trip today. Where we were staying was right on the water in Newport harbor and when I would get up in AM and look out the back slider there would be RB Mergansers and Bufflehead swimming and diving for fish only about 60 feet from the door.
  16. No Time For Sleep

    No Time For Sleep

A horrible day today, the rain won't stop, nice to have pictures to remind me of better days.
  17. Strange behavior

    Strange behavior

No, this bird is not dead. It is a Red-breasted Merganser swimming very actively with its head just in or below the surface of the water. It did that for quite a while.
  18. Red-breasted Mergaser

    Red-breasted Mergaser

A huge fish but too big to handle and eventually the Mergaser had to let it go.
  19. Red-breasted Merganser & company

    Red-breasted Merganser & company

I think the peeps are Least Sandpippers. We had great weather on this Florida trip which allowed for many days in the field and more than the usual keepers.
  20. Siland!

    Siland!

That's the Norwegian name for Red-breasted merganser. This is, I promise, the poorest quality shot I'll share from that day in Oslo. I only share it for the sake of the story's chronology and because these were my first silender (plural of siland). Unfortunately, they stayed far out from both...
  21. Speedy Merganser

    Speedy Merganser

Best day for several months yesterday,-2C in the morning, glorious sunshine and no wind at all and it stayed that way the whole day,a bit warmer later on though. Even at 1/640 sec shutter speed you get a nice panning effect on the water when they fly past at full speed.
  22. RB Merganser

    RB Merganser

I was lying down on some rocks capturing Terns when Mr and Mrs Merganser decided to have a rest beside me,normally they are very wary but seeing me on the ground was not regarded as a threat. Couldn't fit him in the frame so this is the best i could do with this image i think
