He was still as a statue. Several other birds higher up in this tree (other nut hatches, chickadees and Blue Jays) were also. All their heads were pointed in more or less the same direction. An unseen hawk must have been lurking near.
Taken yesterday, this RBN was still as a statue. The yard, usually active with birds, was deserted. I believe the Sharpie that I photographed this morning may have been here yesterday as well, I just couldn't see it.

Frozen in place, not a twitch. I was close enough I could have reached up and tickled its belly and I wonder if it would have moved. There were other birds around the yard, un-moving. Still as statues. I suspect a hawk was nearby, but couldn't see anything.
This is a very aggressive little bird. He regularly chases chickadees and goldfinches from the feeders, and even chases away the larger White Breasted Nuthatch. Usually it's the other way round.
