    Levitating Red-headed Woodpecker

No, I didn't forget to rotate the photo. But it seems to be hanging there in mid-air since its visible claws are not holing on.
  13. Seeing Red!

    Seeing Red!

Seem to be seeing these Red-headed Woodpeckers everywhere I go this season. Quite a contrast from the past few seasons.

So many red-heads around here this year

I've seen more Red-headed Woodpeckers around here this year than the past few years together. And unusually, several have been kind enough to pose in locations where I can get pictures.

At Gander Mountain Summit # 3

After an intervening visits by a Bluebird and a Kingbird, this Red-headed Woodpecker flew over to this same tree to get a view from the mountaintop.

Must've been something in the air. Several birds, including this Red-headed Woodpecker, were showing off their nictitating membrane tonight.

So happy to see a pair. There isn't many of these beauties left, praying they have lots of babies. We kept going back where we had seen them the last few yrs, and till now, they weren't there. We were beginning to worry. But here they are. Yay. :)

  20. Do they blink when they peck?

Do they blink when they peck?

Seeing this picture made me wonder if a woodpeckers blink when they peck to protect their eyes. If you look closely, the eyelid is partially closed as it appears to go to peck.

He/she (not sure how to distinguish) decided to pose for me about 45 minutes before sunset.
  23. Somewhat uncharacteristic Redhead pose

    Somewhat uncharacteristic Redhead pose

Almost appears as a warbler pose instead of the more usual pose on a vertical trunk.
