Red-rumped Woodpecker (Veniliornis kirkii subsp. neglectus) Male, species sexually dimorphic. Bosque del Rio Tigre Lodge, Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica. About 1 km east of the town Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre. Pacific secondary rain forest at ca. 130 m (427 ft) elevation.
Not the best of shots. This woodpecker is a bit of a skulker. The bird was part of a mixed feeding flock found near an army ant column in mangrove forest.
