Another from a series past...

This common hawk is said to prefer mice, as big as it is,but will eat anything in a pinch even carion. I've only observed it twice with prey and both times it was with a squirrel.

Came across this guy on side of the road yesterday. The photo is a bit busy because of the thicket he was in but I like that it shows it's namesake red tail.

No mistaking what hawk this one is.

I saw 4 Red-tailed hawks this morning at Sulphur Springs Valley, 2 were the normal looking western morphs, and 2 were dark morphs. I was lucky to catch one of each in flight.

Usually the Sulphur Spring Valley in Southeast Arizona is a mecca for hawks in the winter. On my 4 hours out there this morning I only saw 4. This one is the first dark morph Red-tailed Hawk I have ever seen. I was lucky to get him in flight as he left the electrical pole he was perched on.
