As with so many bird species, the male is the more colorful one - though the female redstart may be grey, the flashes of yellow still make them striking
The lovely orange and black colors of the American redstart really stand out in the dark pine forest. Unfortunately as they spend much of the time lurking around in the dark forests, you sometimes need to crank the ISO up to get them!
Although not common in SE Kent, there are a few locations where you can see Black Redstarts, most of the places I know are coastal and the birds love to look for food among the rocks and concrete blocks added as coastal defense.
Himalayas - 503
It was early
morning ...
brilliantly lit
... we were all
packed up to leave
Himalayas ... to
resume the mundane
... in
the planes ...
It was difficult to
tear oneself away
from the hypnosis
of the ambiance ...
And as we turned we
were bid adieu by
this fabulous
lady...
How'd ...
Lively and
colorful ... they
are a wonderful
winter visitor ...
This friendly lady
was inquisitive ...
and
almost inquired
about the quality of
birding on that
typically low
illumination
winter day ... and
posed as a
compensation ...
Watch her in a video
clip uploaded...
This male Redstart in our garden is in his first year because he has not got his typical dark colour.
This does not keep him from singing all day long. Obviously, he has not found a parter, and so he's very busy displaying his rich, young voice.
Lady Black Redstart
... does it
for us ...
Best wishes for a
wonderful Christmas
and Holiday Season
to ...
all friends and
fellow travelers ...
