"Our" Redwing blackbirds in Northern California don't show such a broad yellow band on their shoulders. You'd almost think this was a Tricolored blackbird, but their black plumage and red patch are much darker, and it would've been quite a sensation to find one on the East Coast. Maybe...
For a minute there I thought this was another lifer. Then I realized what he was. Not all that disappointed, though. In a way, he was a lifer after all. I'd never seen a Redwing blackbird at this stage before.

Was quite a thrill to watch masses of redwing blackbirds come pouring out of the sky into the bushes for their night roost. Didn't get any good shots of that action, though. Only daytime shots like this one while they were scattered about the Bosque foraging.
With only the rear view, and the bird so distant that we couldn't judge size, we were thinking streaky sparrow or finch. But then she turned her head and the bill was neither sparrow nor finch. It's a female Redwing Blackbird.

Catching up on some I deemed postable that were taken while I was on holiday in Sonoma. The redwings were still in abundance on the meadow, with the once-tall weeds they perched on now bending low under their seed burdens.
