    Mining for berries

When the rowan berries have disapperared from the trees and the ones on the ground have been covered in fresh snow, Redwings have no choice but to start digging. I read a report in a Swedish birding magazine that some Redwings were digging little foxholes that that allowed them access to buried...

Still lots of Redwing shots but with a great deal of variation (I hope).

    Redwing resplendent

The sort of Redwing image I used to dream about getting. It was a far better winter for me than for the poor Redwings.

And a Redwing that was kind enought to pose and provide a focal point.

    A brief pause

I went back the following morning to get some close-ups. On the third day the bush/tree was completely stripped of berries.

    Scottish Redwing

I was delighted to see so many Redwings in Helensburgh. Little did I suspect how many I would find on my return to Sweden. Not so many about now though.

Uncropped image. It was not bothered by passing walkers, dogs, etc. A patch of unfrozen soil was giving it lots of feeding opportunities. Not much depth-of-field at this range!

    Red Berry gourmet

The Redwings have finally found our red berries. This one was inspecting the crop before its friends descended to eat.

    Redwing in deep cover

Saw my first in Scotland on 1st January and regularly after that but didn't get any shots I was happy with.

The melting snow is giving these guys some feeding opportunities at last. Taken through the bottom of a hedge as cover, but straight into the light! Needed a bit of work in Photoshop to balance the exposure.
