From Friday, perhaps the last until next winter. Got two shots: in both, very little red is evident. See you in the morning folks. Thanks for the comments, stay well. John

redwing or song thrush or hybrid? [Pictures] (Greece)

On February 20th I was birding in my back yard and I noticed a thrush. It was the first time I ever saw a thrush so I was skeptical. At first I Identified it as a song thrush (notice the arrow-shaped brown spots) but afterwards I looked up other pictures of song thrushes and none of them had...

    Redwing

To me this one looks a youngster. In The Netherlands the Redwing is named ´´Koperwiek´´ (Copperwing), I suppose because of the rusty-red flanks and underwing.

The same bird as posted on 24 January, in a different pose. Thank you for your comments on my pictures, stay safe and well, and good birding! John

    Hello From Old Kilpatrick

Hi 👋 I am incorporating birdwatching into my daily walks so as to add some distraction to the many steps i am taking, I am very lucky to have a variety of places to walk locally, Hills, Canalside and even a natural marsh, so i see lots of variety. I have two queries if anyone has any ideas why...

Why do birds mostly sit with branches in between us and them?

    One from the back

This year we have had some redwings flitting about. They were kind enough to sit still when I opened the window.

Redwing or Icelandic Redwing? January 30th, 2021, Dunes Dutch Coast

Today I took these images of a group of foraging Redwings. I noticed that one was particularly dark (many dark stripes on breast and belly). Could this be the Icelandic subspecies (Turdus iliacus coburni)? Perhaps it's still not dark enough? In the attached image the candidate bird is shown 3...

    Redwing

This Redwing was further away than the last one I posted, perched on a silver birch tree. The drops hanging from the branches are not from rain but newly melted snow. Thank you for your comments on my pictures, stay safe and well, and good birding! John

Taken a few days ago. The news this morning (Sunday) is that opening the curtains revealed a winter wonderland, with heavy snow falling. Snow this far south could mean it will be a "Fieldfare year". Thank you for your comments on my pictures, stay safe and well, and good birding! John

    Redwing

Until 10 January this year, when three Redwings appeared on a distant tree, the last time I'd seen one was in February 2019 (ie there were none at all last winter). Several birds, including this one, were much closer this morning, albeit in poor light. Thank you for your comments on my...

    Another bather

I don't get many Redwing shots. We have loads of Redwings here in the summer, or at least it sounds like there are loads of them. Could be just a handful doing their endless loop of repeats of the same 3-note "joke" (and then chuckling to themselves). But many or few, they're not as...
