ruby throated hummingbird

  1. Hummingbird

    Hummingbird

Still working on a decent hummer flight shot. Not quite yet, I want one with the wings spread out the other way and haven't managed that yet. Getting closer, but running out of time.
  2. Ruby Throated hummingbird

    Ruby Throated hummingbird

Sorry for so many hummer photos lately. But since they're going to go south soon, have to strike while the iron's hot.
  3. Hummingbird

    Hummingbird

This morning I went outside and happened to look up and see about 35 feet up, a hummingbird and a flying insect locked in an aerial dogfight. They swirled and dodged and dove, and the only frame I managed to catch any of it on the camera is the moment when the insect lost the battle. That little...
  4. Ruby Throated Hummingbird

    Ruby Throated Hummingbird

I know conventional wisdom states that I should crop this photo differently. However, the unripe acorns, just inches away from this tiny bird, make for an interesting size comparison. So I did it this way. I believe this to be an immature male.
  5. Ruby Throated Hummingbird - Patch

    Ruby Throated Hummingbird - Patch

This hummer is easy to spot as he battles the other males. He's got that bright and distinctive patch of white at the base of his bill that really shows up. I've been doing some painting and I wondered for a time whether I dropped a blob of paint and he happened to fly through it when I did...
  6. SAT FUN: Back to the battle

SAT FUN: Back to the battle

Or maybe Sat Fight? Same hummer as in my previous shot. I caught this just as this guy saw another male came to the feeder and he was starting his dive down at it. Interesting to see his beak open for a change, I don't catch that very often. This hummer looks like it's exclaiming: "AH HA...
  7. Ruby Thrtoated Hummingbird

    Ruby Thrtoated Hummingbird

Battle bruised but still feisty, this male hummer stands guard near one of the feeders. He didn't show his red gorget till he took flight for the next fight. It's amazing how much energy these birds put into territorial issues.
  8. Ruby Throated Hummer

    Ruby Throated Hummer

This little lady landed in a dense shrub not far from me. I got one half ways decent shot of her before she left. My closest encounter with so far this summer. In past years they have nested in and around my yard and got used to me fairly quickly. This year they are nesting in the woods across...
  9. Ruby Throated Hummingbird

    Ruby Throated Hummingbird

Finally showing a bit of ruby! This one sat for quite a while and let me take some photos. he wouldn't let me any closer though. I'm not going to complain too much, he looked pretty good sitting there.
  10. Ruby Throated Hummingbird

    Ruby Throated Hummingbird

I'm not sure why, but this season, when these guys are at rest, they go into stealth mode. Most of the time when they're perched they look like this. In fact I'm tempted to re-name them "Black Throated Hummingbirds." It's voluntary, they can switch on or off their gorget at will, as...
  11. Ruby Throated Hummingbird

    Ruby Throated Hummingbird

These guys are really frustrating me this year. They're really jumpy and as sneaky as I try to be, they just won't come near enough to get a decent photo. The males are only rarely showing their red gorget (here once again this hummer's chin looks black) This one was about 20 feet up in a tree...
  12. Backlit Hhummer

    Backlit Hhummer

This Ruby Throated hummer is keeping a cautious eye on me from up in the oak above the feeders. I can't get very close to them this season. For some reason this crop of hummers don't seem to be getting used to me like they have in the past.
  13. Ruffled Ruby Throated Hummingbird

    Ruffled Ruby Throated Hummingbird

This hummer is agitated. He's staring down another male that's just a few feet away to the right of this frame. They both just sat there facing each other like this for quite a while. Neither were showing their red gorget. (They can flash it or turn it dark like in this photo at will) I suspect...
  14. Gone till next spring

    Gone till next spring

Well, looks like the hummers are done for the season and have migrated south. Haven't seen one since Tuesday. This photo was taken last month. I had a feeling it was soon time, so I snapped a few "parting shots" of the final hummers, a female and an immature male. But somehow I managed...
  15. Ruby Throated Hummingbird

    Ruby Throated Hummingbird

This hummer is perched on a length of 3/16th inch (about 4.9mm) clothesline that I use to hang various feeders from. I hope you can see his feet here gripping the wire. It gives an idea how very tiny these birds are.
  16. Thirst quenching?

    Thirst quenching?

Tough to get a half ways clear picture when you're laughing your a** off, but I managed one. This hummer sat on this wire in the rain, and kept sticking his tongue out for a few moments at a time, retracting it, then repeating. The only thing I can think it's doing is catching raindrops on its...
  17. HEY, YOU IN THERE!!

    HEY, YOU IN THERE!!

HEY, YOU IN THERE! If you want clearer photos of me, WASH YOUR WINDOW!
  18. Taking a breather from battle.

    Taking a breather from battle.

This female hummer taking an break, but still alert and agitated, as you can see by the spread tail. Usually when they're perched, it's neatly folded up. I wish there was some way to convey what's going on when these hummers battle. I stand on my deck and they continually chase each other...
  19. Here lurks danger

    Here lurks danger

This male hummingbird has taken to hiding in a dense evergreen bush below one of the feeders in order to ambush other hummers that come for a sip. They fly in, and he bursts out of the shrubbery and zooms up from below in a surprise attack, like a great white shark going for a seal. Then he...
  20. That looks tasty!

    That looks tasty!

Late last evening this female ruby throated hummer landed on a wire and was sihlhouetted against the sky. She sat there for a long time eyeing the tiny spider hanging in it's web in the upper right corner of this photo. I was hoping she's go pluck it out of the web, I've seen them do it a few...
  21. Ruby throated hummer with no ruby

Ruby throated hummer with no ruby

Having a tough time getting a shot of these guys showing their gorget. When they're battling over a feeder it shows, but they're moving too fast for my camera to catch. And then they go land somewhere and it's like they go into stealth mode or something. They fluff up and their chin looks black...
  22. Ruby Throated Hummer

    Ruby Throated Hummer

End of this round! This female hummer's tail is still partially fanned like it can't relax. Probably due to non-stop feeder squabbling. They go at it all day long, it's a wonder anyone gets a sip at all! I don't know if they always do this, but I just noticed this one has it's wings tucked in...
  23. Hummer at rest.

    Hummer at rest.

The hummers around here seem to be in a constant state of battle. Both males and females chase each other all over the yard, and they constantly squabble over the feeders. They're rarely still, which makes getting a shot of one difficult. This one sat for a quick rest, just long enough for me...
  24. Not sipping nectar

    Not sipping nectar

Saw this ruby throated hummer female on the serviceberry tree. Not berry eating or nectar drinking. It was drinking water. She would lean over and delicately sip the drops of rainwater at the ends of leaves and bottoms of the berries. Neat thing to watch.
  25. Blending hummer.

    Blending hummer.

It's amazing how these female ruby throated hummers can be a feathered emerald gem one second, and the next almost disappear. This one landed in a tree nearby and I had a really hard time finding it.
