rufous hummingbird

  1. Rufous hummingbird

    Rufous hummingbird

Based on another image of the tail, I am calling this a rufous hummingbird. Females of rufous and Allen's are almost impossible to tell apart, except for the shape of their outer tail feathers. Anyway, this is a beautiful little gem that happened to pass through my front yard.

Rufous Hummingbird — An overcast afternoon and a little rain. Mature adult male showing beautiful colors on his gorget. A few of Rufous and Anna’s hummingbirds stayed through the mild winter.

    Rufous Hummingbird

I try to post pictures in a more natural setting but this closeup has nice color and feather detail, so I go ahead and do it. A handful of Rufous and Anna’s hummingbirds stayed through the mild winter.

    Rufous Hummingbird

Windy days at the coast but at least the sun comes out sometimes.
  10. Rufous Hummingbird male

    Rufous Hummingbird male

This male and a female arrived two weeks early this year. A fact I'd forgotten-Hummingbirds have 1,000 to 1,500 feathers, the fewest number of feathers of any bird species in the world. Not only do they not need as many feathers because of their tiny size, but fewer feathers also keeps them more...

    Look what stopped by!

I usually see one each year but it has always been in the month of November. This was was the end of December but still very happy to see it. Looks to be an immature to me.

Another shot of this beautiful bird.

    Ruler of the feeder!

This little guy had spectacular coloring and was the nastiest bird in the area... running away every other bird that tried to feed.

  20. Rufous Hummingbird

    Rufous Hummingbird

Lots of hummingbirds at the feeders. The Rufous tends to be more agressive about defending a paticular feeder. This species of hummingbird has the longest migratory rout. According research, this species has a good memory, able to go back to where a feeder was placed the previous year. A group...

I didn't know there was such a day but here's my contribution.

    Fireworks in our yard!

I love that I can sometimes get a "night-shot" effect with digiscoping; created by moderate to deep shade behind my subject. I look to set up the shot with shady background.
  24. Now this is sharing...

    Now this is sharing...

I'm seeing lots of anna's and rufous hummers actually sharing (this one is actually standing on the back of the other one) the open port holes this year. Most years it's constant battles. I removed the yellow flowers from the holes so that they're larger and easier for the orioles to drink...
  25. Rufous Hummingbird

    Rufous Hummingbird

I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever been able to catch a full tail spread on a male and female together.
