    Rufous Hummingbird

Windy days at the coast but at least the sun comes out sometimes.
  5. Rufous Hummingbird male

    Rufous Hummingbird male

This male and a female arrived two weeks early this year. A fact I'd forgotten-Hummingbirds have 1,000 to 1,500 feathers, the fewest number of feathers of any bird species in the world. Not only do they not need as many feathers because of their tiny size, but fewer feathers also keeps them more...

    Look what stopped by!

I usually see one each year but it has always been in the month of November. This was was the end of December but still very happy to see it. Looks to be an immature to me.

Another shot of this beautiful bird.

    Ruler of the feeder!

This little guy had spectacular coloring and was the nastiest bird in the area... running away every other bird that tried to feed.

  15. Rufous Hummingbird

    Rufous Hummingbird

Lots of hummingbirds at the feeders. The Rufous tends to be more agressive about defending a paticular feeder. This species of hummingbird has the longest migratory rout. According research, this species has a good memory, able to go back to where a feeder was placed the previous year. A group...

    Stick Out Your Tongue Day

I didn't know there was such a day but here's my contribution.

    Fireworks in our yard!

I love that I can sometimes get a "night-shot" effect with digiscoping; created by moderate to deep shade behind my subject. I look to set up the shot with shady background.
  19. Now this is sharing...

    Now this is sharing...

I'm seeing lots of anna's and rufous hummers actually sharing (this one is actually standing on the back of the other one) the open port holes this year. Most years it's constant battles. I removed the yellow flowers from the holes so that they're larger and easier for the orioles to drink...

    Rufous Hummingbird

I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever been able to catch a full tail spread on a male and female together.

    The fights begin...

The Anna's hummers that have spent the winter at our feeders gladly shared the sugar water with each other and did so without fighting. Now that there are at least four Rufous here, the territorial fights have begun. The Rufous will fight anyone, including their female mates. The wingbeat...

Gray skies but this little guy and his mate sure do brighten up the day.

Well looky at what showed up

it's been weeks since I've seen my last Ruby-throated Hummer but today, just like 2 previous years in the same week, this Rufous shows up. Not a great image but you can at least tell it's a Rufous ;)
  25. See you later...

    See you later...

The last of the rufous hummers left yesterday. They should return around March of next year.
