A common sight along any beach from Mass. to Vancouver, and that's a lot of beach.

This group flew by while I was taking some shots of diving pelicans

There were many sanderlings on the beach at Dungeness Spit, dashing in and out of the surf and flying along the shore in sparkling flocks when spooked by passing humans. They're very quick and it took scores of shots before I got some with at least one bird approximately in focus. Then it took...

Always a joy watching the ebb and flow of their movements along the beach. Though the "Birds of America" is out of date, it's worth reading the colorful prose which describes each species.

A pair whizzed by, I very nearly tripped over the legs of the tripod as I swung the camera around, but was amazed to nail one of the shots!

Shorebirds feeding "fast and furious" was a good test for the new Nikon P300. It passed with flying colors with it's 7 frames per second speed and fast auto focus.

We went to Minsmere yesterday but it was dull and grey and there were few birds about, so I haven't got any new photos this week. Here is yet another shot of Sanderlings on the beach at Gorleston on a freakishly sunny day a couple of weeks ago. Ron

This painting of sanderlings came from a trip to Florence, OR. There were a bunch of them chasing the waves in and out like little toys.

A pair of waders (sanderlings I think) seem unsure of the best direction to head as the waves come rolling in at their feet.

Coming closer to me with every breaking wave, as I sat (rather uncomfortably) on a rock up the beach. Such busy little feeders.

There is some dispute as to whether this is a Sanderling or White-rumped Sandpiper in transitional plumage. Either way a nice bird.

At 4:20 pm today, the tide was almost at its height - 13 foot. Water covered most of the rocks at the Iona jetty end, driving this group of sanderlings to a high point at around 20 meters from the shore.

These birds were frightened by a near by hawk They fly almost as if it was practiced.

I love trying to photograph birds with reflections. Both crisp and abstract.

This image was made a favorite shorebird photography spot. If you are patient they will walk within an arms length on this very narrow beach

This is a bit of a long shot to show the waves which gave some of the great backgrounds to prevous shots. Some waves were bigger and got these birds moving...as well as me. With these birds , if you do not risk getting soaked then you are not near enough!

These birds are such fun to observe and a challenge to photograph. Never still for a second. I was never able to get a decent shot of them with my digiscope set up. I finally got my new lens a couple days ago. Voila!

I could be mistaken here, shore birds are not my "forte" but, this little tableau is of mostly sanderlings with a lone least sandpiper.
