Taken with the Tuesday4birdsfriends group in the morning walk at East Avenue Park in Hayward. Difficult as it seemed to like the tree with all the tiny twigs in the way.

    Bug eating sapsucker

This sapsucker has been working his tree for quite a while . I'm not sure how much of his diet is supplied by the insects that he attracts to his holes. I assume the high protein is a bonus.

    RedBreasted Sapsucker pair

I had seen the male work this tree before but never had seen the female. When the female arrived there was a vigorous dispute about who was the rightful owner . The female was driven off because the male didn't want to share. Typical male behavior! I was lucky enough to get both in the same frame.

    Hummmm...what spot next

This one must have found the right spot. Shortly after this pose he found a spot on the tree and pecked in the same place for 2 hours.

    Red Breasted Sapsucker

This little sapsucker was pecking on the aluminium railing of my deck before deciding that the tree would make a better meal. This is the little sucker that led me on to bird photography in a more serious mode. Since then I've upgraded cameras and lenses much to the dismay of my pocketbook! But...

Walk out of the office yesterday and this boy was in the pecan tree. Quick to the truck to get the camera and some shots. This was late afternoon and the photo is back lit but the fill flash brought him out.
