    Bluebills (Lesser Scaup)

Two pair of Lesser Scaups swim by on Lake Union in the middle of downtown Seattle.

Being reminded that "crow" is also a verb...

Very vocal American crow in a small tree.
  3. Morning ablutions

    Morning ablutions

This song sparrow has apparently found enough water for a bath, and quite recently.

Checking me out between the overhead wires...

House finch that seems at least as curious about me as I am about him.
  5. Glaucous-winged gull leaving the park after lazing on the ground for a longish time

Glaucous-winged gull leaving the park after lazing on the ground for a longish time

I saw several gulls this morning in the park. As many as seven to nine of them left not long after I arrived, but three were for quite some time contentedly lounging on a low concrete feature near the soccer fields. Later I saw motion and turned to realize they'd decided finally to move on.
  6. Caspian tern flying west with a fish

Caspian tern flying west with a fish

Once again I've made a somewhat poor photo of a Caspian tern and realized upon examination that the bird is carrying a fish in their bill. How do they know not to get close enough for a better shot when they have food?
  7. Caspian tern flying east

    Caspian tern flying east

I saw at least two and possibly as many as four Caspian terns early today in the park; two times I saw birds flying east and two times going west. Each time I saw only one bird at a time, with at least a few minutes between sightings. Quite possible I saw the same two birds twice. They were...

Spotted towhee completely unconcerned about me...

I'm repairing some flood damage in a home in the Mt. Baker area, less than two miles from my place, and as I'm taking tools in from the truck I pass this male spotted towhee and he's not the least bit afraid of me as I walk within two feet of him. From talking to the homeowner and her neighbors...
  9. Curlew in flight

    Curlew in flight

Sharing a couple more shots of the long-billed curlew from three days ago, slightly clearer for identification purposes. In this photo the curlew is flying to another area of the park in hopes of escaping harassment by angry crows.
  10. Long-billed curlew walking

    Long-billed curlew walking

Rare visitor to Jefferson Park, a long-billed curlew walks in the grass, enjoying a too brief period of quiet morning solitude before being beset by agitated crows.
  11. Caspian tern

    Caspian tern

Sharing another photo of the same tern I shared the other day. Might as well round out today's postings of birds too far away against a gray sky... There's a third photo of what is very likely this same bird flying the other direction about 24 minutes later, holding a fish in its beak, but that...
  12. Long billed curlew

    Long billed curlew

It would be an understatement to say the crows were not fond of this beautiful bird. But I'm glad they made enough noise to draw my attention to this exceptional visitor of the park a block from my home. I wish they had stayed a bit longer (and I am so looking forward to the return of my 500mm...
  13. Candlestick bird, aka long-billed curlew

    Candlestick bird, aka long-billed curlew

If it hadn't been for the noise the crows were making I might not have paid enough attention to this one to see they were something unusual and special. This bird was landing on the grass and trying to relax (and probably look for food) but every time they landed the crows would eventually come...

    As the crow flies...

Prettier than average crow flight pose
  15. Barn swallow banking right

    Barn swallow banking right

Beautiful pose if not a stellar capture. Barn swallow performing customary aerobatics in the park.
  16. Starling braking to enter nesting cavity

Starling braking to enter nesting cavity

Two nesting cavities at top of utility pole near my home, both occupied by European starlings. Had been noticing starlings flying toward the top of this pole as I was walking home from the park, wondered why I didn't see them on top of the pole as I got closer; finally realized they were flying...
  17. American robin with muddy beak

    American robin with muddy beak

Saw a number of robins early yesterday morning catching earthworms; should perhaps have made a video.
  18. Caspian tern flying east over the park on a day of ever increasing cloudiness

Caspian tern flying east over the park on a day of ever increasing cloudiness

I specified the direction because I saw very possibly this same bird flying the opposite direction about 24 minutes later carrying what looked like about a 6 to 7 inch (15 to 18 cm) fish. I would have much preferred to share that photo but it's even worse than this one (please bear with this...
  19. Almost completely unprepared for this one...

Almost completely unprepared for this one...

I was doing my best to drive myself irreparably insane trying to get one really good shot of a barn swallow now that they're back when this eagle surprised me. I saw a largish bird coming my way from across the park and figured they were probably a gull, and then I noticed an eagle farther away...
  20. Small skein of snow geese flying west over south Seattle

Small skein of snow geese flying west over south Seattle

Barely saw these birds in time to get a couple photos; of course they were flying away from me and not the other way around... Decided they had to be either snow geese or white pelicans and did some research and from photos, and descriptions of how each bird tends to fly, I became pretty...
  21. House sparrow on... my neighbor's house.

House sparrow on... my neighbor's house.

Once again I'm walking home from the park and as I approach the house I hear a bird singing, very near, and I have to look around a bit before I see this one on my neighbor's rain gutter
  22. A couple of honkers living up to their (nick)name

A couple of honkers living up to their (nick)name

Two beautiful Canada geese flying over the park in the morning. They were very kind in announcing their approach to give me time to make a couple quick photos.
  23. A new (for me) bird!

    A new (for me) bird!

Savannah sparrow in a small tree, one of many at the park today. Hard birds to photograph, relatively speaking, as they're constantly in motion and when they do stop, usually for a very few seconds, they're typically surrounded (or completely hidden) by leaves and branches.
  24. Flicker on the peak of the roof

Flicker on the peak of the roof

Walking home from the park, ready to put the camera away and get some stuff done when I see this flicker on the very top of the roof at the front of my home.
  25. Finally, a Cooper's hawk!

    Finally, a Cooper's hawk!

As I was walking home from Jefferson Park I was making a few last photos when this lovely bird showed up. I've seen Cooper's hawks a few times in past weeks but never close and always to the west in the last light before sunset, which can make for great silhouettes...
