    Sanderling and Sandpiper

The left hand bird is a semipalmated sandpiper. And of course, the Sanderling is also a sandpiper.

Standing still for your photo? No way, I am busy getting food (notice its foot).

Semipalmated Sandpipers? Plum Island, MA, USA

Hello, I'm second-guessing myself on my ID of SESA for these two birds. Could anyone confirm? Thank you!
  7. Semipalmated Sandpiper

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

    This is my best guess.

    Run away

before the surf catches you! Because, for a 'peep' this small, even that little foamy afterwash from a breaker is a whole tsunami :eek!:

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

Another lifer from that trip. Supposedly we have them on the West Coast as well, but in spite of spending a lot of time at bayshore wetlands during my sabbatical year in Berkeley, I'd never seen them there.
  11. Semipalmated Sandpiper

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla) Sexes similar. Shell Ridge Road, Rockport, Aransas County, Texas, USA. Coastal Prairie and Marshes Vegetational Area. Small depressional pond in a coastal salt pan at ca. 1 m (3.3 ft) elevation.

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

This little guy was hanging out all by himself at my favorite lake, so I added him to by collection.

    Semipalmated Sandpipers Courting AK SER'14

I watched this pair interacting for several minutes in the wetland surrounding this short boardwalk where the pair landed for this photo.

    A Few Left

By far the most common Shorebird migrating south through Nova Scotia is the Semipalmated Sandpiper. I believe there are several thousand birds in this photo, taken yesterday.
  18. Semipalmated Sandpiper

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

Another post-breeding adult, perhaps closer to the central image for such, showing a number of winter feathers and nice palmation between the toes.
  19. Semipalmated Sandpiper

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

a similar bird to those in my previous photo, but just after the breeding season has concluded i.e. on the south-bound migration, looking a bit worn but showing just a few winter feathers
  20. Semipalmated Sandpiper

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

These are also Semipalmated Sandpipers in breeding plumage, to the best of my knowledge. They are darker and show more rufous than yesterday's classic bird, but I don't believe they can be pushed over into any other ID. I don't mind discussion. (SEPL in background)
  21. Semipalmated Sandpiper

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

in breeding plumage, front on, palmation between toes quite visible
  22. Semipalmated Sandpiper

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

This bird is in breeding plumage, seldom seen here.
  23. Pectoral Sandpiper Breeding Male ALASKA BREEDER SER

Pectoral Sandpiper Breeding Male ALASKA BREEDER SER

This bird was calling from atop a hummock next to, and facing a very small freezout pond in patterned permafrost terrain in arctic tundra. I took the photo ~10 m away from the other side of the pond. The limited reach of my lens necessitated severe cropping of the photo.
  24. Semipalmated Sandpiper Breeding Adult ALASKA BREEDER SER

Semipalmated Sandpiper Breeding Adult ALASKA BREEDER SER

This bird and its mate were foraging along the vegetated edge of a freezout pond in permafrost terrain on the Alaska north slope of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Slightly webbed toes can be seen.
  25. Semipalmated Sandpiper

    Semipalmated Sandpiper

It is getting towards the end of summer here and shorebird migration is well underway. This Semipalmated was mixed in with a peep flock of mostly Least Sandpipers.
