This short-eared owl is on the hunt for a vole or mouse which are abundant in the tidal wetland habitat. The background shows the waters of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.
I saw this short-eared owl catch a vole and just stayed low on the ground. I moved really slowly to get this view of hime hiding out. Note how his short ears are really sticking up ...
This owl flew by me from behind so it was already past me when I took the shot. I was pleasantly surprised when I downloaded the photo that I actually caught a glance back ...
It's always a treat for me to get a decent shot of these owls in flight. They are so fast and blend in with the background so well they create quite the challenge, for me anyway, to attain focus. I am always impressed by their wing span compared to their size.
Taken at dusk, just as the sun had set. Shot at a distance, heavily cropped and high ISO settings. Still quite pleased with the result - all things considered.
It's wonderful, to have these fantastic birds just up the road from where I live, this one was hunting over the saltmarsh, from two in the afternoon & coming so close.
Off to do my gardening job this morning, so catch up later.
