sharp-shinned hawk

  1. A Visiting Predator

    A Visiting Predator

Sharp-shinned Hawk — This hawk visited outside my window today. In this shot it stretched its wings but didn’t launch.
  2. A Regular Visitor

    A Regular Visitor

Sharp-shinned Hawk — This small hawk visits often, looking for a meal of one of the little birds at the feeder area. NX Studio used to crop, adjust levels, and sharpen.
  3. Waiting and Watching for Breakfast

    Waiting and Watching for Breakfast

Sharp-shinned Hawk — This hawk sat near my feeder area for 23 minutes waiting for a careless sparrow or finch. I had the chance to make many shutter clicks and here is one. I’m not confident identifying some hawks, so if this might be something else, please comment. It’s about the size of a dove...
  4. Juvenile Sharp-shinned hawk

    Juvenile Sharp-shinned hawk

Almost positive on ID for several reasons. First is size. When I first saw him, he was sitting on our deck railing, and launched into the pine tree. My immediate thought was "Kestrel". Then "Nope, wrong color". Second is the square tail, and the rounded head. Third is when he launched from the...
  5. Sharpie

    Sharpie

Never put your camera away until you are off the shooting grounds, lol. This Sharp Shined Hawk was perched near my trail exit as I left the park yesterday. Was a great evening shoot as I added 6 birds to my list, this sharpie included! :)

Hawk ID help, suburban Massachusetts, USA

Hello, My neighbor and I recently took these pictures of two different hawks in our backyards. For the darker pics (my pics), I assume it's a coopers or sharp-shinned. I have never been able to tell the difference. For the other one {my neighbor's): No idea. Is it possible that it is the...

    Sharp-shinned Hawk closeup

April-15th, Tax-day was especially lucky today. This young one flew right by me and landed 40ft. away. AND, while I had my gear at the ready too. Had to swivel it around, focus and shoot in the 30-40 sec it remained studying me, but got it, got lucky this time!

Please correct me if this is a Cooper's. I have a hard time with these younger hawks.

    SHARP-SHINNED HAWK

A winter visitor, this adult Sharp-Shinned is very much relaxed as is evident from the leg pulled up indicating low stress levels.

    Sharp-shinned Hawk

This sharpie was scanning our yard for lunch. He sat out there for what seemed the longest time. So small in comparison to the Copper's and Red-tailed Hawks that visit occasionally. However, the chickadees were not too concerned because they continued to eat their lunch at the feeder while...

    Sharpie's becoming a regular here

Although I think he/she is a beauty, I'm not happy with this raptor terrorizing my birds as it makes several passes through my yard a day. It even landed on my upper deck railing and looked at me through the window. Thank you to all that comment on my images. I appreciate it.
  22. Sharp-Shinned Hawk (Pacific Northwest Varient)

    Sharp-Shinned Hawk (Pacific Northwest Varient)

This is one of the rarer migrants into this area. This Pacific Northwest bird has slight, little oblong, to teardrop shaped markings on the under-tail coverts, where the South West bird does not. This individual could have come from anywhere in the Pacific North West, on up into Canada.
  23. Sharp-Shinned Hawk (composite)

    Sharp-Shinned Hawk (composite)

This is about presentation and aesthetics: art. Two images here. The BG, (everything except the bird) was taken today. The bird was taken about three days ago. Merged these for the pure art presentation.

    Sharp-Shinned Hawk

This is a composite of two separate images merged. It's a chance to see the anterior (ventral) and posterior (dorsal) views of the bird. The images are of the exact same bird taken in the same light so as to maintain the correct color gamut.
