  2. Brown Shrike

    Brown Shrike

I believe that this is a first winter bird of the race cristatus, a migrant through NE China. The local race lucionensis is much greyer, male birds nearly don't look brown at all. More pix of Brown Shrikes (including lucionensis) and other birds at http://math.unice.fr/~ingo/birdgal.php?lan=1
  3. Bull-headed Shrike

    Bull-headed Shrike

A very common bird in southern Honshu in Japan, especially in winter, when it can even be found in city parks like this one. This photo shows a female. More pix of Bull-headed Shrikes and other birds at http://math.unice.fr/~ingo/birdgal.php?lan=1

LIFER FOR ME! I watched this shrike fly back and forth from the branch to the ground, catching insects. This one really gave a show as he twitched his tail continuously while perched.

    Shrike

I believe that this is a Northern Shrike, but I'm not sure, maybe Loggerhead is a better guess. I know that this isn't a great shot, but it was so exciting for me to see this bird. I was lucky enough to witness it spit out a pellet. I would be interested to see what this one was eating at...

I was in my car when I took this picture. The tripod was stacked up in the left pessanger seat, and then I realised that I had forgotten my camera adaptor! I had to hold the camera to the scope. Good thing it was a sunny day, and I could get away with a faster shuttle speed.

    Southern White-crowned Shrike

I prefer tp photograph birds on natural perches unless there is certain x-factor about a shot other than man made ones, but It was too much of a temptation not to photograph this individual
