Finally the last of the siskin flock flew back to the alders, and I gave up on trying to see crossbills and took off across the road to the shoreline path.
When I said the flock would move from tree group to tree group as one, that was a bit of an exaggeration. The move took a few minutes, with a straggler or two waiting until all the others had moved before dashing off to catch up.
Shooting straight up til I got a kink in my neck, and not much to show for it either. The siskins just wouldn't forage further down, even though the alders had cones at the bottom branches too. Darn!
Nov 4 I spent a few hours at the botanical gardens. I was looking for the crossbills, but a great spotted woodpecker kept chasing them away and I never saw them. I did see siskins, though, and waxwings and crows and roe deer.
I kept trying to time my shutter clicks to get this siskin when he turned sideways to check his surroundings, but there's always a slight delay and each time but this once he again had his rump to me and his head down in the seed tray.
