small ground finch

We enjoyed seeing the giant tortoises and were pleased to find lots of birds around the Sanctuary. Sometimes it's difficult to identify the numerous types of finch, but I decided this was a Small Ground Finch, even though it was not on the ground!!

While on the island of San Cristobal, we had the privilege of visiting the home of Jacqueline de Roi, who feeds 200 Darwin Finches each day.

This is from one of the areas with some difference between small and medium GF. Some other areas are difficult. The bird is female-colored, but not all males really differ.

This is a bird from Espaola. They seem a little larger billed than on some of the other islands where Medium ground is competing with them.
