Always a good game at Minsmere. After looking for about ten minutes you suddenly spot a Snipe. Then another and another until you realize there are dozens of the little things, blending into their surroundings. I think there are eight in this shot. Ron
A couple of Snipe and a Lapwing on a calm autumn afternoon at Minsmere. It's good to see the Snipe back in good numbers for the winter as they are one of my favourite birds. I love trying to spot them when they are not in the open like these two. Winter Mixture sweets - mmmm. Ron
This is my best guess on the ID, we get several species here in the winter and as you well know, snipes are a tough ID especially in the field.
Snipe experts, feel free to chime in!
Here is the partner of the female I posted yesterday. An attractive bird in his own right but when standing next to the stunning female, often gets overlooked.
After two years of looking, I finally found this bird. I was guiding a visiting birder Mr. Phil Riner from Georgia (US), he brought me good luck with these birds and I retuned the favor and he was able to get 26 lifers in one day including great views of the Okinawan Rail and Pryer's Woodpecker.
A startled bird and Photographer as this Snipe emerged from a ditch I watched it fly into the ditch and drove slowly to where it was I just got focused on it when it spotted me then it was off.
I just got my internet connection back after three days and three visits from BT what a performance.
This Snipe on a post was one of many I saw perched at the Roadside great to see them sitting up like this
