    Okay, so it's a Song Sparrow with its dander up and a shadow across its beak such that it resembles a pencil.

    Song Sparrows, like Dark-eyed Juncos, are ubiquitous along the entire California coast, but with varied sub-species region by region. I'm not sure of the sub-species differences, however, so can't give you the trinomial Latin name.

    Have several of these birds flitting around the periphery of our yard. They seem content to do that and don't come near the feeders yet. But later on as the weather worsens, my bet is they will come closer.
