Snapped at just the right time, this image shows the female Downy woodpecker tongue. Mother was gathering suet for her youngster, who was in a maple tree just east (to the right) of the suet feeder. Mother, father, and their young ward are frequent visitors lately!
Showed up at our feeder for the first time one day ago. (on a cold blustery day) Fed a lot and by the end of the day was chasing all the woodpeckers from the suet. Only a brief visit today.
We got the upside down suet feeder to keep birds like starlings out. Supposedly starlings perch, and don't "cling" and don't go upside down. Guess the experts were wrong.
