We had some nice warm days and I was hoping to spot a youngster sunbathing (rarely see adults doing it).
So this young Starling didn't disappoint... they love doing it on the roof.

It only seems to be juvenile birds that do this sunbathing pose on the roof. If we could see his rump, we'd probably have a view of his preening gland, where he'd spread his feathers out.
I love how they just seem so relaxed and can stay there like that for several minutes.

I just couldn't resist taking pictures of them.

We're back to the hot sunny July days here; I just can't resist getting pictures of these youngsters posing like this.

I've got several pics of adult and fledgeling starlings doing this on hot days. Ornithologists are divided on why. Some think its to cool down, letting air get to the skin, but why spread yourself in the full sun? Others suggest it's to get rid of parasites or even promote Vit D synthesis...
Last year I just went to Perth, Western Australia. I found that this bird always has sunbathing at the shore of sea and river.
* probably it's black darter, let me know if it's wrong :) *
