This is the male of the Barn Swallow pair who arrived on April 22nd. He and his mate have apparently chosen to use the already-built nest on the building adjacent to mine. Here he is perching on the utility wire that adjoins the building, guarding the nest.

The Barn Swallows returned to my neighborhood on Tuesday, April 22nd, a week later than normal. This is the male of the pair that has been flying around. Our Barn Swallows are of the North American subspecies.
Can anyone tell me if the lighter coloured bird is a juvenile swallow, or is it perhaps a Sandmartin? Would appreciate any help you can give me with this. Thanks
