  1. Dead wood

    Dead wood

A Straw-necked Ibis was sitting on top of one of the dead trees in the middle of the lake. That was nice, as I didn't get to see too many of these as they're not nearly so common as the others (at least not in the parts I visited).

    Making Hay

After lunch we were off on another adventure for me. Working our way round the bay we had an unscheduled stop when we spotted some Straw-necked Ibis at the far side of a hay meadow, in two biggish groups. A real treat for me as so far I'd really only seen singles or couples.

  8. Straw-necked Ibis

    Straw-necked Ibis

Mostly Straw-necked Ibis, a few Australian White Ibis. There was also a large flock of Australian White Ibis with a few Straw-necked Ibis mixed in; and there were hundreds of both types on the ground. This was after the flood waters receded from the lowlands along the Hawkesbury River around...
  9. Alone

    Alone

Not the best of images, but I had few sightings of Straw-necked Ibis on my travels. This one was on the far side of the next paddock and I took it while Hans was still chewing the cud with his new-found friends. I did, once, come across a small flock, but mostly I only saw them alone.
  10. How does an Ibis drink Water?

How does an Ibis drink Water?

Have you ever wondered how an ibis manages to drink water with its long beak when it is too shallow? While I was in Queensland, Australia, one day I noticed how Straw-necked Ibises (Threskiornis spinicollis) and Australian White Ibises (Threskiornis molucca) drank water from the road puddles...
  11. A first for the first of the day

A first for the first of the day

The following day we had a really early start travelling to O'Reilly's. Before starting the steep climb up there we stopped for refreshments at their vineyard. I didn't get any good pictures of birds there, however shortly after we set off again we found a Straw-necked Ibis in a field. Now...

Also often seen at our lake, although less common than the White Ibis

    'Surprise!'

Hi all, had to share this one, I was just about to go out to feed the chicken and wondered why the rooster was crowing outside the kitchen window, (out of his pen) I looked out and saw this Ibis strolling towards the water bowls and feeders. It was quite inquisitive and checked each bowl and...
  18. Distant

    Distant

These guys are supposed to be pretty approachable, but he was way way into the lake, just about as far from people as he could get. I've just realised that this was a page I completed in my book, with the three Ibis species and both Spoonbills! Pleased about that!
  19. Ibis and friends

    Ibis and friends

Strangely there were 3 ibis as well, further along that creek but they'd teemed up with Pacific Black Duck and Maned Duck.
  20. Ibis galore

    Ibis galore

We'd now made our way to the other side of Albany and looked in at Seppings Pond, a longish pond and this was a rather overgrown end. On the far bank were loads, and I mean loads of Ibis. Both species, Straw-necked and Australian. This was the first time I'd seen both species together. Can you...
  21. Straw in the hay

    Straw in the hay

Later on Alex took us on a drive. On our way into Albany we passed a hay meadow which had a lot of Straw-necked Ibis (a lot more than showing in this picture). So in a couple of days I'd seen both species of Ibis here. It took me an awful long time to see this one in Queensland, despite my...
  22. A big guy

    A big guy

1also at this farm, on the far side of the next paddock was a Straw-necked Ibis. Hans was still gossiping, so Judy and I wandered over to see what the news was. We were then advised to go to another location by Hans' new friends. So off we set.
  23. At last....

    At last....

.... I got a proper look at one of these - time after time one or other of my hosts had said "Straw-necked Ibis".... as it was flying away and disappearing behind trees. Here was one strutting through a paddock as we drove along the road!!
  24. Straw-necked Ibis

    Straw-necked Ibis

Tomorrow we're off to stay with the friend with the bird bath outside his lounge window which is visited by 27 species! Can't wait to see what photos I can get!!
  25. Straw-necked Ibis

    Straw-necked Ibis

These were everywhere in Darwin - lawns, verges, parks.
