Snapped at just the right time, this image shows the female Downy woodpecker tongue. Mother was gathering suet for her youngster, who was in a maple tree just east (to the right) of the suet feeder. Mother, father, and their young ward are frequent visitors lately!
Not the best of photos, shot from 6m, but it serves to illustrate the length of the tongue. The length of the tongue surprised me and made me realize that the bill is just a rigid support for the flexible tongue. I think evolutionists have it wrong when they say hummingbirds gradually evolved...
