This little guy was very upset when he found the house sparrows had taken over their usual nest boxes on our upper deck. The swallows are always here early but don't claim their nest boxes until weeks later and by that time the house sparrows have taken them over.
The Tree Swallows are back in our part of the world. These tenacious cavity nesters usually use Bluebird boxes for nesting. They are one of seven types of swallows we have in this part of the world when you include the Purple Martin.
This was just a few of the Tree Swallows that were among the trees in this swamp. Must be a staging area of some kind. They would all fly at once, making a circle and then land in these bare trees, over and over.
This tree is used by male and female as they wait for other parent to finish feeding fledglings and then swoop in and unload their catch of the day to the seeminly empty pits of the young swallows.
Here's another species of swallow, taking a breather from feasting on brine flies. Zooming out a bit, I got a picture of both tree and barn swallows side by side. I may prep one of those for posting later.
