    Surucua Trogon

Been away on a quick trip to one of my favorite places in the cerrado bioma where I go once a year to rest. It's a very small lodge called "holy lagoon". It's not sought out as a "birding" destination, but to me it is. Came home with a couple lifers. This beauty here is one of them.

    Surucua Trogon (male)

This is a male of the northern subspecies, aurantius. The male has an orange belly and appears to be very different from the southern nominate subspecies, which has a red belly. Is it a separate species?

  21. A Trogon

    A Trogon

This is an extremely tranquil bird. It feeds mainly on insects. When you are lucky enough to see it on a place nearby, probably it will let you do wathever you want with your camera. Only it is not so common to see it in the sun, as it prefers to sit under the shade of a tree.

  23. Surucua Trogon

    Surucua Trogon

A male Surucua Trogon from the nominate race surrucura. This subspecies differs from aurantius mainly on the belly, which is yellow instead of red. Taken near Eldorado, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
  24. Trogon Surucu

    Trogon Surucu

Although the head is not in a good position, I thought that the colours of the bird's back would compensate it.
