  1. Bombs away!

    Bombs away!

Whilst walking along the beach I saw this bird trying to break into a whelk by dropping it from a height onto pebbles. I managed to get both the falling shell and the bird in focus.

    Herring Gull close up

The bird was so close that at shortest focal length I could only get the head of the bird, it did mean that I captured the nictitaing membrane moving across the eyeball.

2024 Status Update: My Birding Year So Far

Hey, everyone. You may have realised that I have not posted an update on here in ages. This was mainly due to my declining mental health, which led to my decreased motivation in recording my sightings whenever I go casual birding (as well as sharing my sightings and adventures on this site). I...

    Made it....

Was anyone watching? The Eurasian Blackbird again, this time after he'd completed his high jump exploit, and obviously acknowledging the applause.
  10. Ready for take-off

    Ready for take-off

The houses which front onto the canal on the opposite side to the towpath have private boat mooring privileges. This one has a series of breeze block ledges and is covered with a variety of old road (mostly) signs. There was a ledge just above this Eurasian Blackbird and rather than 'fly up'...

    A blob on a wire

When I see a blob on a wire I have to take the picture of it. Sometimes it remains a blob but this time it was a House Sparrow. Lunch in the churchyard was beginning to be productive. After I posted yesterday's picture, the young Starlings came back in their usual mob. They are now sporting...

    When you've got an itch!

When I was staying with my brother, it was very hot weather during June (does that seem a long time ago LOL}. With my brother's poor health and my walking difficulties, outings were not really what we wanted to do. So this day we decided to have a packed lunch and eat it across the road in the...

    Having a wander

I made the long journey down to stay with my brother and his wife in South Wales (we were going to my nephew's wedding in Sussex as part of my trip). Anyway, close beside my brother's house is the Brecon Canal and I did a short walk along it one day. There was a family of Mallards who'd come...

West Wales (Pembrokeshire) Bird ID from last July

Dear all, Several birds I spotted in Pembrokeshire at the end of last July elude my (amateurish) bird identification efforts, and I'd be delighted if you could help me out. Thank you kindly for any help! 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) Cormorant or shag? 9) And lastly: This...

    Northern Goshawk

Local female Goshawk watching me as I checked her nest last Summer (under licence). She never alarm called or made a fuss which is unusual for this species. The nest itself was eye level to a footpath just metres away so her silence helped in not drawing attention to her three chicks which all...

Followed this mature male for several years in a Brecon Beacons territory but now seems to have disappeared sadly. Still the best individual Bird I have photographed.

Barn owls and little owls cohabitting?

Hi all, Hopefully I have posted this in the right place... So, last week I found a few barn owl feathers in an area of fields, with a barn in the centre (on the outskirts of the brecon beacons in Wales). I didn't see any barn owls on that trip, but assumed that barn was where they were coming...
